Charlie Chaplin first came to Waterville with his family in 1959 and returned for holidays every year for more than ten years, staying at the Butler Arms Hotel. A bronze statue of Chaplin stands on the seafront, and the Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival has been held in the village each August since 2011, with the permission of his estate.
